When someone needs thick gloves, a sturdy shovel and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty, it’s unclear if they are getting ready for a pleasant day of gardening… or are planning to commit murder.

In the new NBC show “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” it could be either option.

“Grosse Pointe Garden Society” focuses on four members of a suburban garden club — Alice (AnnaSophia Robb), Birdie (Melissa Fumero), Brett (Ben Rappaport) and Catherine (Aja Naomi King) — as they navigate their way through murder, threats, affairs and potential treachery.

The show’s synopsis uses the garden motif to loosely explain the plot: “As dark truths begin to rot their lives under the surface, they struggle to remain as perfect as the flowers blooming in their garden above.”

“It’s the beauty of flora and fauna on top, and then the reality of the dirtiness and messiness and complication and death and sex underneath,” AnnaSophia Robb tells TODAY.com about the show.

Robb also says the show’s format will jump back and forth through time, and separate episodes will focus on individual characters’ backstories.

“Tonally, (the show) can go darker or lighter,” toeing the fine line of comedy and drama, Robb adds.

NBC released the first official trailer in February.
