Lakeshore Canadiens’ forward Trevor LaRue was a big winner.

The leading scorer in the Bill Stobbs Division, the 22-year-old LaRue also claimed the most valuable player award and most sportsmanlike player for the division in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

LaRue had 36 goals and 85 points in 39 games, which averages to 2.18 points per game all while picking up just four minor penalties throughout the season.

The Canadiens’ Nicolas Rosati was named the division’s rookie of the year. The LaSalle native, who was an 11th-round pick in last year’s OHL Draft by the Windsor Spitfires, led the entire PJHL in rookie scoring with 42 goals and 72 points in 42 games.

The top goalie award went to Lakeshore’s Hunter Welk, who posted a 1.85 goals-against average in 18 games with one shutout.

Meanwhile, the Essex 73’s tandem of Adrian McBride and Brogan Colquhoun combined to post the league’s top goals-against average. Essex allowed just 77 regular-season goals in 42 games.

The first-place 73’s also produced the division’s top defenceman in 17-year-old William Claridge.

The six-foot-five, 200-pound Claridge, who is from Belle River, had eight goals and 38 points in 42 games in his rookie season with the 73’s. 

Flyers in control

Goalie Marcus Vandenberg made 39 saves to help the Leamington Flyers to a 4-2 road win over the Niagara Falls Canucks on Sunday.

With it, the top-seeded Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven West Conference quarter-final series.

Brody Cook, Colton Smith, Brayden Degelas and Michael Denny scored single goals for the Flyers.

Vipers dop finale

Alec Stewart had the lone goal for the LaSalle Vipers, who closed out regular-season play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League with a  3-1 road loss to the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins on Sunday.

The Vipers (29-20-1-0) finished as the sixth seeding the Western Conference and will face the third-seeded Stratford Warriors (33-14-3-0) in the first round of the playoffs.

73’s edge Blades

Gabe Barrette netted the game-winning goal at 4:21 of overtime to lift the Essex 73’s to a 4-3 road win over the Blenheim Blades on Sunday.

With it, the top-seeded 73’s took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series over the sixth-seeded Blades in Bill Stobbs Division semifinal play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Luke Sherk, Gabe Piccolo and Tyler Fleming also scored for the 73’s, who watched the Blades rally to force overtime with two goals in the third period.

Canadiens in control

Goalie Boe Piroski made 24 saves to earn the shutout as the Lakeshore Canadiens scored a 5-0 road win over the Amherstburg Admirals on Saturday.

With it, the second-seeded Canadiens took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series over the fifth-seeded Admirals in Bill Stobbs Division semifinal play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Nicolas Rosati, Marco Sladoje, Bryce Scarlett, Eric Bisson and Evan Fenech each scored single goals for the Canadiens.

Saints secure bronze

The St. Clair Saints women’s soccer team captured the bronze medal at the OCAA indoor championships in Vaughan.

The Saints dropped a tough 3-2 decision to the Centennial Colts on penalties in the semifinal of the Final Four event, but rebounded to beat the Conestoga Condors 2-1 in the bronze-medal game.

Holy Names high school product Lily Collins was named a championship all-star for her play on defence.
