Ireland secured their first win at the Women’s World Cup qualifier in Pakistan as they defeated Thailand by 46 runs in a high-scoring contest.

The Irish side’s hopes of securing a place at the World Cup in September had been been ended by defeats against hosts Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh.

Amy Hunter top-scored for Ireland with 76 as skipper Gaby Lewis hit 75 and Leah Paul 67 as they reached 305-4 in their 50 overs.

In their reply, Suwanan Khiaoto hit 59 for Thailand but they were always behind the run rate as Louise Little produced bowling figures of 5-28 and Coleraine youngster Kia McCartney took two wicket on her Ireland debut.

Khiaoto was one of Little’s victims and was the final Thailand batter to be dismissed as they were all out for 259 in 49.1 overs.

Ireland’s final game in the tournament will be Friday’s contest against Scotland in Lahore.
